Roof, gutters and exterior

Look for loose or missing shingles from the ground. Clean gutters and check downspouts so spring rain drains away from the house.

Check siding, trim and caulk for winter damage.

Cooling and plumbing

Schedule an air conditioner tune-up before the heat arrives. Check outdoor faucets and hoses for freeze damage.

Test sump pumps and look under sinks for leaks.

Yard and drainage

Rake and overseed thin spots. Look for erosion or standing water after the first heavy rain. Trim trees that hang over the roof.

Start a lawn care plan for the season.

Inside the house

Replace smoke and carbon monoxide detector batteries. Check window screens, door seals and the attic for signs of moisture or pests.

Deep clean and declutter while you are at it.
